Symptoms of Gluten Allergy

Gluten allergy is a condition that results in abnormal reactions of the intestine due to increased sensitivity to gluten, thereby making it impossible for affected individuals to tolerate foods containing gluten. The condition is also known as gluten intolerance. It is important to note that consumption of gluten containing foods does not necessarily cause adverse effects in the intestines in all people, but can lead to development of a range of other gluten allergy symptoms that can be very distressing. People belonging to all age groups can be affected by gluten allergy symptoms.

The two main components of gluten are the proteins, gliadin and glutenin. Gluten is generally present in various grains such as rye, wheat, oats and barley, etc. and the foods that are made from them.

Gluten allergy can cause inflammation of the walls of the intestine, which in turn can result in the development of a myriad of discomforting symptoms. The inner walls of the intestines have many tiny finger-like structures known as villi. These villi are usually affected in people with gluten allergy.

Prolonged and serious damage of the villi or the linings of the intestines can ultimately affect the ability of the intestine to absorb certain essential nutrients, including minerals and vitamins. Severe cases of gluten allergy can eventually result in the development of celiac disease. In celiac disease, the walls of the intestine undergo substantial damage due to attack by the immune system which mistakes the consumed gluten to be harmful for the body. People affected by celiac disease are extremely intolerant or allergic to gluten and hence have to strictly adhere to a gluten free diet.

A number of reasons such as physical injury, genetic causes, trauma and various types of serious diseases can trigger the onset of gluten allergy symptoms.

This can be done through the process of self-testing. Take a one week period and write down everything you eat, without removing anything from the usual diet.  After you have written down what you have eaten, go back to your journal one or two hours later and write down any symptoms that you experience, from stomach pain to headache or itching and skin rash. You can then inform the doctor about the changes made by certain food products to your health.

Gluten allergy symptoms in adults can appear immediately after intake of foods that contain gluten or a few hours after. Some of the signs and symptoms of gluten allergy symptoms in adults are as follows:

  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Flatulence
  • Bloating and gas
  • Cramps and pain in the abdomen
  • Loss or gain in weight
  • Nausea
  • The feces may have a foul odor
  • Inexplicable exhaustion or fatigue
  • Persistent headaches
  • Irritability and depression
  • Ulcers in the mouth
  • Skin rash
  • Pain the joints and muscles
  • Dermatitis and eczema
  • Problematic breathing during physical activities
  • Asthma

Management of gluten allergy symptoms

If gluten allergy symptoms are left undiagnosed and untreated, then it can result in the development of various serious complications such as diverticulitis, anemia, Crohn’s disease and osteoporosis, besides celiac disease.

Hence, individuals must visit a doctor to check whether they are allergic to gluten, if they experience any of the gluten allergy symptoms. Once the condition has been diagnosed, then all the patients have to take a diet that is completely free from gluten. A number of cereals such as wheat, barley, rye and oats and their food preparations have gluten. Hence, all these grains and foods should be avoided. Also, make sure to read the labels for gluten before purchasing a food product.
