Rash on Inner Thigh

A rash on inner thigh can be caused due to a number of reasons. It is a very discomforting situation and can result in problems while walking or sitting down. A few causes of rash on inner thigh are discussed below.

  • Elevated levels of sweating, especially in the inner regions, during hot and humid weather condition can result in the development of a rash on inner thighs. People with excessive amounts of fat in the thighs are more prone to the condition, because of the presence of large number of skin folds which allow the accumulation of sweat in them. Continuous running and poor hygiene can also increase the vulnerability to developing rash on inner thigh.
  • Exposure to irritants such as poison ivy, poison oak, etc. when outdoors can cause a rash on the inner thighs as well as other parts of the body. One can also get exposed to poison ivy, etc. while petting a dog carrying the irritant on its fur.
  • The use of apparels made from synthetic fabric, or tight clothing which causes friction in the inner thigh region, or clothes with an elastic band that rubs against the skin, can increase the risk to developing a rash on inner thigh. The use of rubber and/or latex in clothing, or presence of certain chemicals in the detergents used to wash the clothes can also elevate the risk. Infants using diapers can also be affected by formation of a diaper rash.
  • Jock itch is a type of fungal infection that causes a rash on inner thighs. It is identified by the presence of reddish or scaly rashes on the skin that tend to blister and discharge fluids. Intense itching of the inner thigh folds is also common. A jock itch rash on inner thigh has clear, red borders and features normal colored skin in the center.
  • When people experience a rash on inner thigh after using a new brand of skin care products, then the condition is probably an allergic reaction to some chemicals present in those cosmetics. Patients need to immediately stop the use of the culprit products to alleviate the skin disorder.
  • Heat rash is a condition which results in formation of itchy bumps and blisters on the skin. It can occur as a rash on inner thigh or can affect other parts of the body. It is caused due to blockage of sweat glands, which is turn prevent the evaporation of perspiration. Increased sweating can result in trapping of the sweat beneath the skin leading to development of heat rash
  • A rash on inner thighs can also occur due to bites and stings from various insects such as mosquitoes, ants, bed bugs, etc. The rash from insect bites generally tends to disappear on its own. However, one must take the necessary steps to eliminate such insects from one’s immediate environment to prevent future cases of an insect bite rash on inner thigh. Tick bite rashes can be harmful and hence need to be checked by a doctor.
  • A rash on inner thigh can also appear in people with food allergies, after the intake of certain food allergens. The rashes may be isolated to the inner thighs or may occur all over the body. Some of the common food allergens include peanuts, milk, avocados, shellfish, etc.
  • Another cause of a rash on inner thigh is shingles. It is a disease which causes formation of itchy, band-like, reddish rashes along with burning sensations and pain in the affected areas of the body. It is important for the people affected by shingles to seek medical attention.
  • Various sexually transmitted diseases or STDs, such as syphilis, herpes, genital warts, etc. can result in a rash on inner thigh, in both women and men. The symptoms elicited by each of these diseases are different, but the conditions generally occur in the genital region. It can also migrate to regions below the groin. All patients need to consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Individuals who shave their thighs and legs may occasionally experience razor bumps or a rash on inner thigh. This rash may occur as itchy red marks. However, people with sensitive skin may develop a large blotchy rash on inner thigh.

Treatment

  • A rash on inner thigh may be a symptom of a mild condition, or it can signify the presence of severe diseases. Hence, all cases of a rash on inner thigh have to be evaluated by a doctor.
  • Itchiness can be alleviated with a cold compress and application of ice on the affected areas of skin. Application of aloe vera gel may also soothe the skin.
  • Patients should wear loose fitting clothes till the skin anomaly is completely resolved. Wear shorts at home. Completely dry the genital, thigh and groin region after a bath or a shower.
  • Fungal causes of a rash on inner thigh can be treated via antifungal medications.
