The seed are called arils and they are a great option to have a low fat or reduced calorie diet. History of Pomegranate

As per legend pomegranate was grown in the Garden of Eden. The pomegranate tree is native to Persia. It is a small deciduous tree or shrub that bears the fruit and grows to around five to eight meters in height.

Pomegranate then spread from the Caucasus to the Middle East, the Western countries of Asia, Russia, China and the drier parts of Southeast Asia. It is also found in tropical Africa, Arizona, California and the Mediterranean regions of Southern Europe. The tree bears the pomegranate fruits during the months between March to May in the Southern Hemisphere and between September to February in the Northern Hemisphere.

Since the ancient times, Pomegranate has had great cultural and religious significance. Egyptians and Mesopotamians have also been known to consume pomegranate seeds to avail the health benefits of pomegranate.

Pomegranate health benefits

  • Pomegranate is rich in antioxidants which help the body to fight the free radicals and thus prevent damage to the body. Due to this property of the fruit, some studies indicate that intake of pomegranate juice may help prevent cancer.
  • Pomegranate intake helps reduce the buildup of plaque and improves blood circulation, thereby promoting cardiac health.
  • Pomegranate is also high in fiber and thus helps in reducing constipation and promoting the digestive process. It also provides a high level of satiety and hence can be consumed for weight loss. Additional benefits of pomegranate intake include the lowering of blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
  • It is rich in Vitamin K which improves the overall cognitive health of an individual.
  • Pomegranate is very low in calories and hence its consumption as a food supplement is a great way to lose weight.

  • Pomegranate juice may interfere with metabolism of certain medications such as anti cholesterol drugs.
  • Excessive intake of pomegranate juice may increase the blood sugar levels.
  • Pomegranate juice reduces the blood pressure and its intake along with hypertension medications should be avoided as it can lead to severe drop in blood pressure.
  • Individual who are allergic to pomegranate or asthmatic patients should avoid pomegranate juice as it can result in side effects such as breathing difficulties, hives, vomiting, nausea and itchy, red eyes.
