A person can feel pain in any part of the abdomen. It can be either upper or lower part, right or left side of the stomach. When pain becomes worse it is very hard to do any activity like walking, and even standing is difficult. 1. Bowel Obstruction: Constipation is one of the reasons for stomach pain. This can be treated easily but precaution has to be taken. If a person suffers from pain in abdomen, and along with that vomits or lets out loose stool or no stool, then doctor should be consulted quickly without wasting any time. It could be due to blockage in the left side of the large intestine, descending colon, or sigmoid. If it is not treated on time or no treatment is done then it can lead to serious health problems which include severe infection resulting in permanent injury.

2. Diverticulitis: When the inner lining of the colon is frail it swells and a pouch is formed which leads to obstruction in food flow. This state is known as ‘diverticulitis.’ When this sickness advances it results in pain on left side of stomach. It mostly affects the elderly people and along with this they also experience nauseated feeling, constipation and bloating. However it is not fatal. Medical experts usually advise intake of low-fiber food to maintain good health.

3. Viral Hepatitis: Hepatitis viral infection causes dull abdominal pain. This pain does not decrease after eating or drinking which is not in the case pain caused due to bowel obstruction. There are 5 types of viral hepatitis infections. Some symptoms of hepatitis viral infection are:

  • The eye and skin becomes yellow
  • Nauseated feeling
  • Dark tinted urine

In such a condition one should not wait; instead doctor should be consulted as soon as possible to diagnose and treat the disease. If medical help is not taken on time then this infection can become very serious and life threatening.

4. Kidney stones: If a person experiences pain in left side of stomach then it may be because of stone that has been displaced from the left ureter or kidney. Also if a person suffers from stomach pain and he has a family history of kidney stones problem then he should consult the doctor quickly for proper treatment. Sometimes pain may also occur because of improper functioning of left adrenal gland or left kidney.

5. Inflammation of pelvis: If females experience pain on left side of stomach, it is an indication of pelvic inflammatory diseases. Sometimes due to this they can also suffer from continuous pain and fever. Thus doctor should be consulted to ensure proper treatment and this will also help to prevent serious problems in the future.

6. Digestive problems: Pain on left side of abdomen can be an indication of serious problems with spleen, liver or pancreas. Intake of painkillers can give relief for some time.

Children might suffer from pain in abdomen due to excess eating or intake of excess spicy and hot food items. These are very common reasons for abdominal pain amongst children. They usually do not chew food properly, but rather swallow it which leads to pain and constipation. If abdominal pain is severe then doctor should be consulted immediately.
