What is Mangosteen ?

Mangosteen is a tree that is native to Southeast Asia and bears a fruit that is shaped like a pear. The fruit’s flesh is dense and its rind is smooth and thin. The fruit is tasty and somewhat acidic with a flavor similar to that of peach or citrus. Mangosteen fruit color ranges from purplish red to deep purple when ripe. Mangosteen benefits are many and marketers use the medicinal and nutritional benefits of the fruit to sell its products. Mangosteen is available in the form of puree or supplements or in the form of mangosteen juice. History of Mangosteen

The botanical name for mangosteen is Garcinia mangostana. The tree can be found in the Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, China, Taiwan and the Philippines. The height of this evergreen tree ranges from 7 to nearly eighty feet. Farmers in the United States have tried to cultivate the tree in regions such as Florida, Hawaii and California, but mangosteen has not adapted to the climatic and soil conditions in those states.

  • The consumption of mangosteen fruit  is also an effective way to treat allergies as it has anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic qualities.
  • The tannins present in mangosteen rind are used to make topical medications that tighten the mucous membranes and the skin.

Side effects of Mangosteen

  • Mangosteen interferes with the working of the drugs used to treat cancer. Any consumption of mangosteen products should be done only after consulting your oncologist.
  • When excess of lactic acid is collected in the body due to glucose metabolism, it results in a metabolic condition called lactic acidosis. Some cases have revealed that regular intake of mangosteen can result in lactic acidosis.
  • Diabetic patients should avoid the intake of mangosteen as it has very high sugar content
  • People who are prone to allergies should not intake mangosteen as it may result in side effects such as itching, rashes or hives. Severe cases of mangosteen allergy may show symptoms such as swelling or inflammation of the throat, mouth or lips and chest tightness or pain.
  • Mangosteen may hamper with the ability of the body to prevent bleeding. Hence individuals who are taking blood thinning drugs should avoid consuming mangosteen as it may result in excessive bleeding.
