Lower back pain is very common. Every individual can suffer from back pain at any time of the life. Due to this people are unable to work and spend a lot of money to get relief. Research shows that in the United States of America people spend around fifty billion dollars every year for back pain.

Lower back pain left side could occur because of various reasons. Causes differ from person to person. Back pain could occur at anytime and could be mild to severe.   • Pregnancy: In pregnancy severe lower back left side is very common. Position of the baby in the womb, changes in hormones and development of uterus are some reasons for back pain. When the uterus grows, it moves the magnitude of the body and with it the abdomen muscles also stretches and weakens. This further leads to change in the posture of the body resulting in stress on the lower back. But when the spine becomes tight and condensed, this disc is stimulated and the gel breaks through the outermost portion of the disc and moves on to a nerve. This condition causes severe back pain.
  • Muscular pain: Lower back pain left side while inhaling or exhaling is due to injuries to muscles. Muscular spasm occurs because of abrupt movements of the body. Back pain could also occur during the breathing process because of a pulled or strained diaphragm muscle. This pain moves and shifts to other parts of the body like chest, abdomen.
  • Lumbar strain: Lumbar strain usually affects people who in 40s or more than forty. Trauma or occurrences that have automatically strained the tissues of lumbar can result in uneasiness and lower back pain left side. Injuries results in inflammation of nerves in that particular area and this further restrict free movements.
  • Spinal stenosis:  It affects people of more than fifty year of age or more. Spinal stenosis is a condition where the spinal canal is constricted because of inordinate bone development or bulging disc. It also occurs when a muscle tissue in the spinal canal becomes thick. This compresses the spinal cord and nerve root which go out the spinal cord resulting in back pain. Lower back pain left side is also followed by weakness and lack of sensation.
  • Kidney infection and kidney stones: Infection in kidney and kidney stones cause lower back pain. It is accompanied by blood-stained urine and burning sensation when urinating.
  • Innate bone condition: Some disorders in bone are innate in nature which leads to severe back pain. It could affect only a part of the body or the whole body. Some innate bone conditions are:
    • Osteoporosis
    • Scoliosis
    • Spina Bifida
    • Osteoporosis
    • Some other causes could be as follows:
      • Ovarian problems like ovarian cyst, uterine fibroid.
      • Irritable bowel syndrome
      • Development of tumor in any part of the body

Lower back pain left side during breathing is said to be a sign of severe health issues such as cardiac and pulmonary condition. Therefore once signs and symptoms are seen doctor should be consulted immediately without delay. Some treatment measures and medicines are:

  • After doctor’s advice over-the-counter medicines that are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory can be taken to ease the pain.
  • One can also change the position of sleeping so as to lessen the pain.
  • One should not be bed ridden for a long time; rather one should do physical activities like walking.
  • Hot water bag on the affected part of the body or a hot bath can also relieve the pain.

Prevention of lower back pain left side

Some preventive measures can be followed for lower back pain left side. They are:

  • One should always have a correct posture.
  • One should not sit on a chair for a long time.
  • One should change positions and not be in the same situation for a long time.
  • One should support the back with a tiny pillow when driving a car or in office if there is no back support. One should always sit straight when driving scooter or bikes.
