Amoxicillin Rash

Amoxicillin is a drug that is used to treat bacterial infections. It is the most widely-used antibiotic that is prescribed for children. It may be noted that the effects of amoxicillin can get decreased by bacteria which beta lactamase. Such bacteria are resistant to penicillin and other kinds of beta lactam antibiotics. Hence, amoxicillin is often taken along with a beta lactamase inhibitor such as clavulanic acid. Thus, the effects of amoxicillin are more potent as its vulnerability to beta lactamase resistance is significantly reduced.

The medical uses of amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is used for treating a variety of bacterial infection such as streptococcal pharyngitis, acute otitis media, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, Lyme disease, salmonella, and chlamydia infections. Amoxicillin is also given for the prevention of bacterial endocarditis to individuals with compromised immune systems or other high risk people who are undergoing dental treatment; for preventing and treating anthrax; and for prevention of infections by strep pneumococcus in those individuals who do not have a spleen. However, doctors in the UK do not prescribe the use of amoxicillin for treating infectious endocarditis prophylaxis. In some cases, the drug is used for treating instances of acne vulgaris which have not responded to treatment by other types of antibiotics.

Side effects of amoxicillin

  • The side effects of amoxicillin are similar to those caused by other types of beta lactam antibiotics. A few side effects include vomiting, nausea, antibiotic related colitis, and rashes. Patients may also experience diarrhea or loose stools. In rare cases, individuals consuming the drug may experience lightheadedness, mental changes, insomnia, anxiety, confusion, unclear thinking or disorientation, and sensitivity to sounds and lights. Patients who experience any of the above listed side effects must immediately seek medical attention.
  • Intake of amoxicillin can result in intense and sudden onset of allergic reactions. In such a scenario, the patient must immediately seek emergency care. An allergic reaction to amoxicillin consumption usually begins with an alteration in the mental state of the patient. It then leads to a skin rash and extreme itchiness which typically commences at the fingertips and near the abdominal area, and migrates quickly to other parts of the body. Other symptoms include vomiting, feelings of fever and chills, and nausea.
  • It is important to remember that any hint of the above listed symptoms should be taken in all seriousness and immediate medical care sought be sought. Other important point to remember is the fact that milder symptoms of an allergic reaction, like rash, can appear at any period of treatment. It may also occur a week after amoxicillin treatment has been stopped. Individuals who are allergic to amoxicillin have to strictly avoid all forms of the drug, as its side effects can be life-threatening for them.
  • When amoxicillin is used along with clavulanic acid for more than one week, then some patients may experience a case of mild hepatitis. Younger children who have consumed acute quantities of amoxicillin usually tend to experience renal dysfunction, vomiting, and lethargy.
  • In rare cases, children as well as adults who have never consumed amoxicillin or penicillin-like medications but are currently being treated with the drug, may develop an itchy rash three days after initially consuming the drug. This rash is not an allergic reaction and is known as amoxicillin rash. The rash typically appears on the torso and then spreads from there. It can be described as being maculopapular or measles-like in appearance. Patients should consult a doctor after the appearance of such a rash.

Important things to know before amoxicillin intake

  • Individuals who are allergic to penicillin or penicillin-like drugs should avoid amoxicillin consumption.
  • The effect of birth control pills gets substantially reduced with the use of amoxicillin. Patients may consult a doctor for alternative means of contraception when they are undergoing amoxicillin treatment.
  • All individuals must inform their doctors if they are suffering from kidney or liver diseases, asthma, mononucleosis, blood clotting or bleeding condition, or any other kind of allergy. Additionally, patients must ensure that they inform the physician if they are allergic to cephalosporin like Cefzil, Omnicef, Keflex, Ceftin, etc.
  • Patients should not share the drug with any other patient, even when he/she is suffering from similar symptoms. Flu, common cold, and other viral infections cannot be cured with amoxicillin intake. It is important for patients to complete the entire course of amoxicillin treatment. This holds true even if the symptoms cease to exist after a few days. A doctor will advise when to start and when to stop the drug dosages.
  • Amoxicillin can be consumed with or without food. Patients who are taking the medication in the liquid form must make sure that they are consuming the exact quantity as prescribed by the doctor. Use a medicine cup or a measuring spoon for this. The liquid medication can be taken directly or with water, fruit juice, and milk. It has to be consumed at one go and not saved for later.
  • Store the medicine in a cool place away from light, heat, and moisture.
